Selva Bananito Lodge, which opened its doors in December of 1995, is a secluded
rain forest lodge situated 20 km south and 15 km inland of Puerto Limón on the
Atlantic side of Costa Rica. It is owned and operated by the Stein family, who
moved to Costa Rica from South America 26 years ago.
For the seasoned and new traveler alike, the lodge provides first-rate comfort
while trying to limit human impact on the environment. Our eleven spacious cabins
are constructed of beautiful, salvaged wood and stand at least 10 meters from
one another. They feature large, tiled bathrooms with solar-heated water, one
queen sized and one full sized bed, or two queen-sized beds, ample decks, and
hammocks. To maintain a more natural night-time atmosphere, we use no electricity
but provide portable lamps for nighttime reading.

From Selva Bananito Lodge you can see not only the private reserve, but also
a portion of Central America's largest expanse of protected wilderness areas,
La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, which is more than 1 million hectares (2.4 million
acres) in size. The Stein family's land shares borders with this enormous reserve.
The nonprofit foundation the family established has been instrumental in leading
land and watershed protection efforts on behalf of the Amistad Biosphere Reserve
and regional residents. One third of the family land (415 hectares or 1,000
acres) is used for sustainable agriculture and cattle management. Here you will
find open areas such as the valley of the Bananito River and its reforested
pastures (left), which are ideal settings for bird watching.
