Tortuguero National Park, with its 21,000 hectares of preserved tropical rain forest, provides the best opportunities to experience a wide range of tropical life.
Day 1 - Braulio Carrillo National Park & Boat transfer.
Our representative and transportation will pick you up at your hotel to start your excursion to Tortuguero. Cross the continental divide and the impressive rainforest of the Braulio Carrillo National Park by bus until reaching the Caribbean lowlands for a typical breakfast. From there we will continue the trip on the main road for a while and later through rural roads and banana plantations until reaching the little dock La Pavona. At this point we start a breathtaking boat trip on calm waters through a network of rivers. During the trip our guide will point out birds and animals and will illuminate the natural history of the area.
Upon arrival to the lodge in Tortuguero you will enjoy a caribbean lunch near the pool area. In the afternoon your tour guide will introduce you to the local life style and the history of Tortuguero town. ( by boat ).
The tour to see the Green Sea Turtles laying eggs at night is only possible during the months from July to September. ( Optional tour not included )
Attention: Although Mawamba Lodge has a privileged location between the beach and the Tortuguero River, swimming is not permitted or recommended.

Day 2 - Tortuguero National Park & transfer to San Jose
Before breakfast ( at 6:00 a.m. ) you will embark on a boat tour through the narrow channels of the National Park in search of caimans, sloths, toucans, turtles and monkeys. The boats are small & open-topped for a better view. You will be delighted and comfortable while enjoying nature at its best! After breakfast you will leave the lodge by boat heading to La Pavona dock. From here we will continue by bus until reaching Rio Danta Restaurant for lunch. After lunch we will continue our return to your hotel in San Jose arriving between 4:00-5:00 p.m.
From the Rio Danta Restaurant you can continue your itinerary to the South Caribbean or to the Arenal Volcano area. ( to arrange! )
End of the trip
On this trip to
Tortuguero you are only allowed to take 30 pounds of luggage per person due
to the space limitation on the boat transfers. If you are not coming back to
San Jose, you are allowed to take all your luggage without any problem. You
can also fly in or fly out from Tortuguero, or combine one way by boat and land
and one way flying. ( Please quote the flights separately! ) If you fly in or out you are strictly allowed to take only 25 pounds of luggage
Mawamba Lodge is
located between the ocean and the river, with walking access to the beach. Swimming
in the river or in the ocean is not recommended. The lodge has a beautiful pool
surrounded by a tropical vegetation. Having front beach is a great advantage
in general and a great plus during the laying of eggs of the green sea turtle
( Chelonia mydas ). The tour starts right at the beach of the hotel. ( Season:
July to September ) If you are planning to take this optional tour it is important
to wear dark clothes ( black ). Photos or videos are strictly prohibited!
