This little town by the beach is 17 kilometers ( 10.2 miles
) south of Cahuita. The 12 km stretch between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo Village
is one of the most beautiful areas in the country. The beaches are the most
picturesque on the entire coast, although you have to be careful while swimming. The
beach located in town is mainly for surfing because of it's currents and waves.
There are little restaurants and bars for dancing at night. It is a small and
charming town with a Caribbean flair. The best beaches are located south of
Puerto Viejo starting at Punta Cocles. The places for dancing are Stanford,
Johnny´s Place and Bambu. The village itself lies between the thick forested
hills of the Talamanca mountains and the sea. It´s a quiet and dusty place,
but well-cared for, with pretty hand-painted signs pointing to the restaurants
and cabinas, and rasta red, green and gold splashed all over the place. Most
locals are Afro-Caribbean descent.
